The binder absorbs moisture from the air. Slowly, in a process chemists call hydrolysis, it starts to break down. This is what causes the tape to feel sticky or gummy, and it's why old tapes sometimes squeal or shed a fine brown dust as they play. At the same time, the magnetic particles themselves gradually lose their charge, a process known as print-through or signal degradation, which shows up as fading colour, weaker contrast and increasing static or noise in the audio.

Average Lifespan of Common Tape Formats

Every format ages a little differently because of the tape stock used and the width of the tape itself. Here's roughly what to expect.


VHS

VHS tapes are generally considered to have a realistic lifespan of somewhere between 10 and 25 years before quality loss becomes noticeable, and closer to 40 years before a tape becomes genuinely unwatchable — though we've seen plenty of tapes fail well before that if they've had a rough life in a hot shed. VHS uses a relatively wide tape and simple recording method, which helps it age a bit more gracefully than some later formats, but the plastic shells and binder are still vulnerable to heat and humidity.


VHS-C

VHS-C is essentially the same tape stock as full-size VHS, just in a compact cassette designed for camcorders. Lifespan expectations are similar to standard VHS, but because VHS-C tapes were often used in camcorders that got less careful handling — passed around at parties, left in cars, stored in camera bags — physical damage tends to show up earlier than chemical decay does.


MiniDV

MiniDV is a digital format recorded onto tape, which sounds like it should hold up better, and in some ways it does — there's no analogue signal to gradually fade. But the tape itself is extremely thin and the recording is far more densely packed, which makes it more sensitive to dropout errors. A single damaged section of tape can cause a chunk of digital video to freeze, pixelate or vanish entirely, rather than just losing a bit of clarity the way VHS does. Hi8

Video8

Video8, the analogue predecessor to Hi8, shares a similar cassette size and many of the same ageing characteristics. It's an older format overall, so most Video8 tapes still sitting in Sydney homes are now approaching or past the 30-year mark.


Digital8

Betacam and Betacam SP were the professional broadcast standard for years, and the tape stock used is generally higher quality than consumer formats.
