Everything We've Learned From Converting Thousands of VHS, MiniDV & Super 8 Tapes Over 20 Years

There's a particular sound a box of old tapes makes when you pull it out from the back of a cupboard — cassette cases knocking against each other, sometimes a rattle of loose screws or a broken hinge. After twenty years of opening these boxes, that sound still means something. Every collection is different, but the patterns are remarkably consistent. Same worries, same questions, same relief on people's faces when a tape they'd written off actually plays.

This isn't a sales pitch. It's what two decades of handling VHS, MiniDV, Hi8, Video8, Betacam and Super 8 has actually taught us — the stuff you only pick up by doing the work, not by reading a spec sheet.

Why People Wait So Long

Almost nobody digitises their tapes the year they stop using a VCR. It usually sits for a decade or two first. There are reasons for that, and none of them are laziness.

Moving house is a big one — tapes get boxed up "for now" and the box never gets unpacked properly. Some people genuinely don't know what's on a tape and put off dealing with it because they're not sure it's worth the effort. Others simply don't have a working VCR anymore and assume that means the tapes are already gone, so there's no urgency. And some of it is emotional — a box of tapes from a marriage that ended, or footage of someone who's since passed away, isn't always something people are ready to sit down and watch straight away.

We don't push anyone on this. But every year that box sits in a garage is a year closer to the point where it can't be saved.

What We've Learned About VHS

VHS is the format we see the most of, simply because it was the most common for the longest. A few things show up again and again.

Fading and colour shift is common on tapes recorded in the '80s, especially ones stored anywhere with temperature swings. Mould turns up more than people expect, particularly on tapes from Sydney garages and sheds — humidity is the main driver. Stretched tape usually comes from a tape that got jammed in a machine at some point and was pulled out rather than properly ejected; it shows up as a slight wobble or warble in the audio.

Tracking issues are often fixable just by cleaning the heads on a well-maintained deck, but a genuinely worn tape will show tracking lines no matter what machine it's played on. Broken cassette shells are more common than you'd think — a cracked case can still be transferred, but it needs careful handling first.

One thing that catches people out constantly: tapes recorded in EP or LP mode. Extended Play let people fit more footage on one tape by slowing the recording speed, which was great for capacity and genuinely rough on picture quality even when new. Decades later, an EP tape is almost always noticeably softer and more prone to dropouts than an SP tape from the same era. If your VHS footage looks a bit off compared to what you remember, this is often why — not deterioration, just the recording mode.

And then there's the mismatched label problem. Someone wrote "Christmas 1994" on a tape in 1994, then recorded over part of it in 1997 without changing the label. We've opened tapes expecting one thing and found something else on there more times than we can count — which is honestly one of the more interesting parts of this work.

MiniDV

MiniDV tends to surprise people, because the quality is often genuinely excellent — it's a digital format, so there's no gradual fading the way there is with analogue tape. A well-preserved MiniDV tape from the early 2000s can look sharper than people expect.

The failure mode is different, though. Instead of gradual quality loss, MiniDV tends to fail suddenly, in small chunks — a dropout causes a section of footage to freeze, glitch or briefly drop out entirely, rather than just looking a bit soft. It's more binary: mostly perfect, with the occasional glitch, rather than uniformly aged.

The bigger practical problem these days is playback equipment. A lot of MiniDV camcorders connected via FireWire, a connection type that's basically vanished from modern computers. We keep working decks and the right capture hardware specifically because so many people still have tapes but no working way to get them off the cassette anymore.

Hi8 and Video8

Hi8 and Video8 were Sony's consumer camcorder formats through the '90s, and we still see a steady stream of them. These tapes are narrower and more tightly packed than VHS, which makes them a bit more prone to dropout and binder issues as they age.

The real bottleneck with this format isn't the tapes — it's the camcorders. Sony Hi8 and Video8 units haven't been manufactured in a long time, and the ones still working are ageing right along with the tapes they play. We service and maintain our own decks specifically because sourcing a reliable one has become genuinely difficult.

Super 8 Film

Super 8 is a different job entirely, since it's actual film rather than magnetic tape, and the problems are physical rather than electronic.

Colour fading is expected on older stock — some colour shift is just chemistry doing what it does over fifty years. Film also becomes brittle with age, which matters a lot when handling it, since brittle film is far more likely to tear at a splice point than fresh stock. Speaking of splices — home movie reels were often physically cut and taped together by whoever was editing them at the time, sometimes decades apart, and those old splices are frequently the weakest point in the whole reel.

Warped reels happen from heat exposure and need careful handling before they'll feed through equipment cleanly.

One thing worth explaining clearly: there's a real difference between scanning Super 8 film and filming a projector screen. Projecting the film onto a screen and recording that with a camera introduces flicker, uneven exposure, and a noticeable loss of detail — it's essentially recording a recording. Proper frame-by-frame scanning captures each frame of the actual film directly, which gives a dramatically cleaner, sharper result and doesn't put more physical strain on ageing film by running it through a hot projector bulb.

The Most Common Mistakes We See

A few mistakes come up over and over, usually made with good intentions.

Playing a mouldy tape to "check how bad it is." This is one of the worst things you can do — it spreads mould through the machine and onto whatever tape gets played next.

Storing tapes in sheds and garages. Understandable, since tapes take up space, but heat and humidity are the two biggest accelerants of tape decay.

Cheap USB tape-to-digital converters. These devices vary enormously in quality, and a lot of them produce noticeably worse results than proper capture equipment, especially with tapes that are already marginal.

Throwing away the original tape after digitising. We'd always suggest keeping the original for a while after conversion, at least until you've confirmed the digital files are backed up properly and playing correctly.

Fast-forwarding or rewinding a damaged tape at high speed. This puts more mechanical stress on a weak tape than gentle playback does, and it's a common way a marginal tape becomes an unplayable one.

Trying the same tape in multiple different VCRs hoping one will work. Sometimes reasonable, but a machine with dirty or misaligned heads can do real damage, and running a fragile tape through several unknown machines multiplies that risk.

Things That Surprise Customers

Some things catch people off guard nearly every time.

Occasionally a tape contains completely different footage than what's written on the label — a recording from years earlier that never got taped over, sitting underneath what everyone assumed was there.

Audio often survives in better condition than picture, since the audio track degrades more slowly than the video signal on most analogue formats. People are sometimes more moved by hearing a voice again than by the picture itself.

We've had kids recognise grandparents they never actually met, just from home movie footage. And it's genuinely common for families to think a piece of footage — a wedding, a specific birthday — is gone for good, only to find it's still there and still recoverable once the tape's properly assessed.

Questions Customers Ask Every Week

Can a tape that's been sitting in a garage for 20 years still be converted?

Often yes. Garage storage isn't ideal, but a lot of tapes survive it better than people expect. The only way to know is to have it assessed.

Is it too late for tapes with mould on them?

Usually not, but they need to be cleaned properly before they're played, not just wiped down at home.

Why does my digital copy from years ago look worse than I remember the tape looking?

Sometimes it's an early, lower-quality conversion. It's worth having older digital transfers re-checked against the original tape if you still have it.

Will digitising damage the original tape?

Playing any tape carries some wear, but a single careful playback for conversion purposes is far less risky than repeated home viewings over the years.

Why can't I just use my old VCR to convert tapes myself?

You can, for tapes in good condition. The risk is with tapes that are already degraded — a home setup doesn't have the same ability to stabilise or clean a struggling tape during playback.

Do you still work with formats like Betacam?

Yes — we maintain equipment across VHS, VHS-C, MiniDV, Hi8, Video8, Digital8, Betacam and Super 8, since a lot of collections turn out to be a mix of formats once we go through the box properly.

Our Advice If You Find Old Tapes Today

Don't play anything showing mould, stickiness or a musty smell — get it assessed first. Store the rest somewhere stable indoors rather than a garage or shed while you sort out next steps. Prioritise anything you don't have another copy of, and anything already showing visible wear, over tapes that look fine and can reasonably wait.

If you're not sure what format you're holding, that's completely normal — a lot of people can't tell VHS-C from MiniDV at a glance, and that's fine. Bring the box in as-is rather than trying to sort it yourself first.

Looking Ahead

The equipment that plays these formats isn't being made anymore, and the number of technicians who properly understand how to service it keeps shrinking. That's not a scare tactic, just the practical reality — tapes that are perfectly fine today are only useful for as long as something exists that can play them. That gap is what makes this work more relevant now than it was ten years ago, not less.

Final Thoughts

After twenty years of this, the thing that still stands out isn't the technical side — it's watching someone see footage of a person or moment they thought was gone.
